Horseshoe Buying Guides & Factory Insights

Steel Horseshoes Wholesale: A Buyer’s Specification Checklist

Wholesale horse-shoe purchasing works best when every supplier quotes against the same written specification. A size label alone may not identify the shape, dimensions, nail-hole layout or finish you need. Use this checklist to make supplier responses easier to compare and to reduce avoidable clarification before an order.

This is a purchasing-information guide, not farriery, veterinary or product-safety advice. Confirm the horse’s needs and fit with a qualified farrier, and confirm every product detail with the supplier before ordering.

1. Define the product and intended range

Start with the exact product page, model or reference you want quoted. State whether you need a standard catalogue item, a mixed-size assortment or a custom/OEM discussion. If the shoe is for a particular use, describe that use without assuming that a general product label proves suitability.

For each requested style, record the material the supplier confirms, front or hind pattern, size range, shape/profile, nail-hole layout, surface finish and any other design feature that matters to your range. Ask the supplier to identify what is confirmed for the selected model and what still needs a drawing, sample or engineering review.

2. Send measurements that can be checked

When dimensions matter, attach a drawing or mark a clear photograph with the measurement points and units. Include the drawing revision and identify any critical dimensions. Do not assume that a size number means the same thing across different suppliers or product families. Compare the actual shape and measurement method, then ask the supplier to confirm the proposed match in writing.

If you are changing suppliers, use the same approved shoe, drawing or measurement record for each comparison. See our horseshoe size-matching record guide.

3. Make quantity and packing unambiguous

Write whether quantity means individual pieces or pairs. If the order includes several sizes or front and hind patterns, provide a line-by-line breakdown. State the requested pack quantity, inner and outer packaging, labels and carton marks. If you do not know the supplier’s available pack format, ask for it rather than assuming a standard carton.

4. Include delivery and approval requirements

Provide the destination country and city or port, the delivery term you want quoted if your purchasing process specifies one, and your target dispatch or arrival window. These details affect the commercial response; an estimated date is not a confirmed commitment. Ask the supplier to confirm availability, sample timing, production timing, freight and any documentation for the selected items in writing.

If a sample is needed, state what it must be checked against and who will approve it. Record the approved sample or drawing revision, material description, finish, hole pattern and packaging so later orders can be compared to the same reference. Our sample approval record guide explains a practical record format.

5. Compare like with like

When reviewing quotations, check that each supplier priced the same model, dimensions, material, finish, quantity, pack format and destination. Separate the product price from tooling, samples, freight, insurance, duties and other charges where applicable. Ask what is included and what remains unconfirmed. Do not rely on generic online price tables, certification claims or monthly-capacity figures unless the supplier provides current evidence for the relevant item and order.

For a standard product versus a custom order, ask which details can be confirmed from the existing range and which require development or sample approval. This helps avoid treating a catalogue reference as a promise that every size, finish or modification is available. Read our guide to planning stock and OEM horseshoe orders.
